Million Skips in Stefanów

Wednesday, 2018-02-28

Historical overview of the way towards achieving 1 million skips of output through shaft 2.1.

In 1988, in November to be precise, a decision was made to halt the construction of the K-2 mine in Stefanów. But the Bogdanka mine’s later development and the need to increase coal extraction forced the company to come back to the plan of launching a mining plant in Stefanów. This time, however, it was not going to be a separate mine, but a mining field of the existing LW Bogdanka.

The planning (designing) of the current shaft hoist in shaft 2.1, i.e. a single-compartment hoist with a skip hoist, began in 2005. At the end of 2006 an agreement was signed with the relevant contractor for restoration of the effective operation of machines and equipment left in shaft 2.1 following the first stage of the deepening of the shaft (late 1980s).

In 2008 the Company bought a hoisting machine previously used in the liquidated field of the Piast Mine, Czeczot Site, and the design work began on the future hoisting machine.
The de-flooding and deepening of shaft 2.1 commenced in 2007. These works were carried out by the consortium of PRS “Wschód” and PBSz Bytom. The next stage involved shaft reinforcement, which was completed in February 2010.

Once the reinforcement was ready, the time came for constructing surface facilities and installing shaft equipment on level 1026 and in the skip pocket. After the technical designs had been completed, the hoisting machine and hoist signalling equipment were delivered, installed and launched.

Following the installation of ropes and hoisting tubs (which took place in early May 2011), in September 2011, the inspectors of the Specialized Mining Authority in Katowice carried out a test of the shaft hoist, and on the basis of the test, the Director of the SMA issued a decision to commence a trial start-up on 1 October 2011 – that day marked the beginning of output extraction through shaft 2.1. The trial start-up ended on 9 May 2012 by virtue of the following decision of the Director of the SMA: “Permit to open shaft hoist in shaft 2.1 for mining operations”.

To date, i.e. 27 February 2018 at 7:20 AM, the shaft hoist in shaft 2.1 in Stefanów conveyed a round total of 1,000,000 skips of output to the surface.

We wish Bogdanka’s workers, especially those working in the Stefanów field, more millions of skips.
